FLASHBACK: February Poll Showed Just 41% of Crimeans Wanted to Join Russia

Current results from the referendum in Crimea about joining Russia show some 97 percent of voters hoping to secede from Ukraine. But those polls have shifted dramatically since February, when a poll showed that just 41 percent of Crimeans thought “Ukraine and Russia must unite into a single state.” Another December poll showed that  56 percent of those polled did not want to join Russia.

As of 2001, the Crimean population was 58.5 percent ethnic Russian.

The two options on the Crimea poll were to join Russia or to seek more autonomy from Ukraine under the 1992 constitution.
