In an apparent effort to court Hispanic voters, Hillary Clinton has hired an illegal immigrant as a staffer for her 2016 presidential campaign.
The new employee, Lorella Praeli, is a “Dreamer,” an immigrant who was brought to America illegally as a child and is now seeking legal status. As a result of President Obama’s 2012 executive order granting amnesty to such immigrants by halting their deportation and granting them work permits, the Clinton campaign is not breaking the law by employing her.
As Stephen Dinan explains in the Washington Times, Praeli “has tentative legal status and a work permit, so it is legal to hire her — but she is still not in lawful presence.”
Praeli, who is 26 years old, was previously employed as the advocacy and policy director for United We Dream, an organization that advocates on behalf of young immigrants. She played a role in the organization’s campaign to pressure President Barack Obama to grant amnesty to the Dreamers. Her new role for the Clinton campaign will consist of outreach to the Latino community.
Amanda Renteria, the national political director for Hillary’s campaign, issued a statement on the new hire:
We are thrilled to have Lorella Praeli, a DREAMer, join our team because of her courage and perspective in the fight for Latino families across the country.
Bringing Lorella into our campaign is the next step in making sure families aren’t living in fear of deportation, all students have the chance to go to college, and that any comprehensive immigration reform ensures full and equal citizenship.
The Dream Action Coalition issued a statement congratulating Lorella, but cautioned the Clinton campaign that this one appointment would not satisfy their demands:
We congratulate Lorella for her new position as she has unquestionably demonstrated an ability to get the job done and commitment to the Dreamer and immigrant community. Nevertheless, we urge the Hilary campaign to allow her to continue the fight for our community she will be representing and not just be a spokesperson for campaign rhetoric.
Mrs. Clinton has already said she would expand the scope of Obama’s executive order by providing legal support for illegal immigrants in immigration court and granting amnesty to the illegal immigrant parents of the “Dreamers.” Given that the Justice Department has already said that expanding amnesty further would take an act of Congress, Mrs. Clinton may want to watch her promises.
