Appearing on The McLaughlin Group on Friday, liberal columnist Eleanor Clift of the Daily Beast took the defense of Hillary Clinton and Democrats in general regarding Benghazi to a whole new, and frankly astonishing, level.
Responding to Pat Buchanan's lament about the media's failure to fully investigate events in Benghazi, Clift walked right off the deep end in, not only belittling the murder of Ambassador Chris Stevens, but outright denying it was murder at all.
"I would like to point out that Ambassador Stevens was not murdered, he died of smoke inhalation in the safe room in that CIA installation," said Clift. She used sarcastic air quotes to emphasize her contempt for the idea that anything other than some random accident was to blame in the ambassador's death. Smoke inhalation. It's hard to imagine this isn't a parody.
She didn't stop there either, claiming that the attack on the embassy "was an opportunistic terrorist attack that grew out of that video."
It is hard to imagine the kind of jaded partisan bitterness required to say something so preposterous as if it were reasonable. The embassy was attacked. That attack killed Stevens. Is it really necessary to draw a map for liberals on this point?
