Transphobia: 'Tranny' Is Now, Apparently, a Heinous Slur

The latest word not covered under the First Amendment

Actress Gabourey Sidibe from television's "American Horror Story: Coven" appeared on The Arsenio Hall Show and discussed living in New Orleans while filming the series. Sidibe recounted a story of visiting a bar there with her friends where, upon leaving, they would always witness "a gang of cops arresting trannies." She goes on to jokingly say, "I don't know what goes on with trannies, but tranny on tranny crime needs to stop!"

After her apparent overuse of the word "tranny" - 5 times in less than a minute according to the Huffington Post - outrage poured in. Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, said:

Using the word 'tranny' isn't OK anymore.

Allyson Robinson, a specialist in LGBT inclusion, wrote:

It's tremendously disappointing to see Sidibe put her prejudice so callously on display like this.

Sidibe apologized via Twitter saying she did not realize "tranny" was a slur. Incidentally, Sidibe can be seen in a photo on Twitter with friend and transgender actress/spokesperson, Laverne Cox.

Before long, there will be nothing left to say in America that isn't turned into some kind of intolerance or phobia.
