Singer Morrissey to Merkel: 'I want Germany to be German'

"I'm sad that Berlin has become the rape capital… because of the open borders.”

In a recent interview with German newspaper Die Spiegel, the former frontman of The Smiths decried Europe's descent into multiculturalism, declaring that European nations are throwing away their identity.

As reported by the UK Express, singer Morrissey, 58, said,

“I want Germany to be German. I want France to be French. If you try to make everything multicultural, you will not have any culture in the end. All European countries have fought for their identity for many, many years. And now they just throw it away. I think that's sad.”

Asked if he considers German Chancellor Angela Merkel to be the “mother” of Europe, due to her many years as the leader of the country and her power within the EU, he responded, “Well, she's smart enough not to say much. She stays silent, which is very interesting. But I'm sad that Berlin has become the rape capital… because of the open borders.”

The UK Express then tried to discredit Morrissey by claiming that rates of rapes and sex crimes had fallen in Berlin and across Germany. Morrissey, who has frequently spoken out in support of Brexit, went on to praise England’s decision to get out of the EU and recover its national sovereignty:

"The outcome of the Brexit referendum fascinates me because it was a victory for democracy. The people said yes. Whether or not to endorse Brexit is another matter, but I was very proud of the British."

And we're proud of you, Morrissey, for having the cojones to take a stance that's unpopular, to say the least, among your showbiz colleagues.
