Rose Parade Float to Feature 'Gay Wedding'

"Love is the Best Protection"

According to an article in Pasadena Star News, the 2014 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California will feature a live gay wedding atop a float sponsored by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) under the title, "Love is the Best Protection".

New Year's Day, 2014, will mark the 125th anniversary to Pasadena's most treasured tradition when floats, decorated from the top-down with fresh flowers, take the five-mile trek down Colorado Boulevard before a live audience that clocked in at an estimated 800,000 people last year with a television audience of 80-million viewers worldwide.

The float, as seen in the graphic below, will feature gay couple Danny Leclair, 45, and Aubrey Loots, 42, tying the knot over a large wedding cake made of "coconut chips and maroon-colored kidney beans with white roses and dendrobium orchids".

This will mark the third wedding ceremony performed live at the Parade - the first being performed in 1989 and considered then the “most widely witnessed wedding in American history.”

The second wedding took place only last year as part of a contest conducted by Farmers Insurance before Proposition-8 had been struck down by the Supreme Court in June this year. Farmers Insurance had planned to repeat the contest for their 2014 float, but instead opted to honor teachers.

The Canadian born Leclair told Star News he and his South African partner had no intentions of getting married anytime soon, but jumped the chance upon winning a lottery to ride on the AHF’s float at a gay wedding expo last fall. In an AHF press release, Leclair stated:

Having my relationship recognized legally is already a dream come true. To be able to declare my love to the world at large in hopes of inspiring others to live proudly and authentically is an enormous honor.

The theme of this year's 125th annual Rose Parade will be "Dreams Come True".
