Currently on a trip to Japan with his band "Roots," drummer Questlove and his agent Dawn Englehart had a racist anti-Japanese exchange on Instagram. The conversation caught by gossip blog Oh No They Didn’t! featured the two along with Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi using a Japanese stereotype, interchanging the “L” and “R” consonant sounds, in their posts.
Questlove captioned the photo of a Christmas-decorated clock train at a shopping center with a question for his manager:
@questlove: Hey @dawnenglehart is it racist for me to write the Sour Tlain? #chipanesedownunder2013
@dawnenglehart: Nah you're in The Loots. You're allowed.
@padmalakshmi: Hahahaha ha! You ruys clack me lup
According to Oh No They Didn’t!, after several angry comments, Englehart supposedly responded “It’s not lacist if it’s taloo,” prompting Lakshmi, who was born in India to joke: “and I get a yellow pass anyway.”
Questlove also posted an Instagram video of a woman speaking Japanese, with the spoken intro: “Ladies and gentlemen, they are talking in tongues.”
Both Instagram posts were eventually deleted.
