The above disturbing video from Radio Free Afghanistan shows a crowd reportedly beating a woman to death for having burned a copy of the Koran. The crowd can be seen beating and kicking her, hitting her with sticks, and even dropping large bricks and blocks of stone on her. Her body was then burned, and thrown into a river.
Police and witnesses say the killing took place near the Shah-e Doh Shamshira shrine on March 19.
"We were watching this incident. She burned the Koran,” one eyewitness told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan.
"A lot of people gathered around the spot,” he added. "They burned her."
During the murder, multiple voices can be heard shouting "Allahu Akbar." Four suspects have been arrested.
CBS News, which describes the mob as "protesters," reports that the 27-(or 32 depending on the press outlet) year-old victim Farkhunda may have been suffering from mental illness. Eyewitnesses say the mob were also shouting anti-American and anti-democracy slogans.
Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi told Radio Free Afghanistan that there is an investigation underway into the "very unfortunate incident."
