In a pre-Super Bowl interview Sunday, Fox News' Bill O'Reilly sat down with President Obama for the first time since 2011 seeking satisfying answers for the many questions surrounding Benghazi, Obamacare and the IRS scandal. None were offered and the President placed the blame on O'Reilly and Fox News for keeping those stories alive.
There were many reactions to the interview -- from dissatisfaction of O'Reilly's "softball" questions, all the way to "Boom!" did you see Obama take down Fox News? Below are some of the reactions from leftist sites that show the stunning lack of concern they have for incredibly important matters like Benghazi. Some of these outlets just seem to laugh them off as no big deal.
Think Progress said O'Reilly used his "favorite anti-Obama topics":
The longtime Fox News host and conservative firebrand focused on his network’s favorite anti-Obama topics, including the botched roll-out of Obamacare’s website, the attack at the consulate in Benghazi, and the questionable IRS investigation of some Republican-leaning organizations.
So speaking against Obamacare, Benghazi or the IRS is now "anti-Obama."
Two Huffington Post headlines stated:
Obama Slams Fox News
Obama Takes Down Fox News
The most balanced criticism may have come from columnist Conor Friedersdorf of The Atlantic who actually wanted more hard-lined questions. Friedersdorf compared O'Reilly to a WWE wrestler saying, "Bill O'Reilly is to journalism what the WWE is to fighting."
[H]e conducted a faux-tough interview made up of questions that were virtually guaranteed to elicit nothing of value.
Salon.com said this would be an important interview for any journalist and said it would be a "great opportunity to ask important questions of the most powerful politician in the world." Then wryly commented:
So, obviously, Bill O’Reilly decided to spend the majority of his one-on-one with President Obama talking about the stuff that really matters — like Benghazi and the IRS.
The Daily Kos posted "Five things you need to know about Bill O'Reilly's interview with President Obama." Number four said:
#Benghazi, #IRS, and #Obamascandal really are hashtags that only the right cares about. In the middle of grilling the president about allegedly not calling Benghazi a terror attack, O'Reilly said to the president: "I've got to get to the IRS." Which of course was true, because Fox Nation would never forgive him if he didn't press the president on yet another bogus scandal.
However, PolicyMic wins for the most callous commentary:
"I want to get this on the record ..." O'Reily repeatedly said during the interview, jumping first on the failures of the healthcare.gov site (wasn't that a thing back in October?) then on Benghazi (is that even a thing?) then finally on the IRS/ Tea Party scandal (which most everyone has moved on from).
To ask whether Benghazi, where four Americans were killed because their government would not protect them, "is that even a thing," is heartless. Unfortunately, they are simply repeating the words of their president -- that it is indeed not a thing, it is only a Fox News thing.
