According to Philly.com, protests are scheduled in Gettysburg this weekend which marks the 154th anniversary of the Civil War’s bloodiest battle.
The report states:
The Sons of Confederate Veterans and a group called Real 3% Risen have received special use permits for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in a special section north of Meade’s Headquarters.
“We make accommodations for people who want to exercise their First Amendment rights,” said Katie Lawhon, a spokeswoman for Gettysburg National Military Park.
Officials also are aware of plans for other rallies that have been announced on social media but have not obtained permits, and there are unconfirmed reports that anarchists plan to burn Confederate flags during the anniversary of the battle…
Reports that the anti-fascist group Antifa plans to burn Confederate flags and desecrate graves have prompted calls on social media for other groups to gather in Gettysburg to counter those protesters.
The anniversary of the battle, which raged from July 1 to July 3, 1863, comes at a time when there is a growing movement to remove Confederate symbols from public spaces.
This is of great concern to The Gettysburg Museum of History, which posted about the planned flag burnings on its Facebook page about how these threats are hurting historical tourism:
This museum has been careful to note how unlike others, it will not cave to political correctness no matter what:
The photo above was also posted to the museum's Facebook page with the following message:
“Reminder: We are NOT the Gettysburg National Military Park. We ARE The Gettysburg Museum of History, 2 different places. We (The Gettysburg Museum of History) have NOT and would never ban the Confederate flag or any historic item from our museum. Also, we would never ban an educational interpretive item containing the Confederate flag. Apparently some other museums and institutions have banned some flags to some degree but not US! As our t-shirts say "We Would Rather Be Historically Accurate Than Politically Correct". Please share to help get the word out. The Gettysburg Museum of History is not censoring history. Thank you.”
It's obviously frustrating to run a museum dedicated to the Civil War when fascists in the country are trying to desecrate graves, remove monuments, and rename anything named after Robert E. Lee. The museum calls them "History Grabbers" in a post posing this question: "Do you think Gettysburg is a proper venue for 'The History Grabbers' to make their point? What is 'their Point'? Does anyone really know? We ask just what is the point?"
Tyranny, totalitarianism, forced oppression, violence -- that's the only thing fascists understand. Erasing history is just one of the steps to reach their envisioned utopia.
