A lone gunman opened fire at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida Friday, killing five people and wounding more before laying down and submitting to authorities.
"The shooter was a passenger on a Canadian flight with a checked gun," wrote Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca on Facebook. "He claimed his bag and took the gun from baggage and went into the bathroom to load it. Came out shooting people in baggage claim."
The airport had tweeted that there was an “ongoing incident” at the Terminal 2 baggage claim. The terminal serves Delta Air Lines and Air Canada.
"It was very surreal. He did not say a word," John Schlicher, a witness, told Fox News about the shooter. "He was shooting people that were down on the ground, too."
The gunman reportedly got down on the ground and waited for police to arrive after he ran out of bullets.
The suspect, Esteban Santiago, said to be wearing a Star Wars T-shirt, was taken into custody without incident and unharmed. Florida Sen. Bill Nelson told reporters that Santiago was carrying a military ID.
Video from the scene shows several people wounded in the baggage claim area, with one person lying in a pool of blood with a head wound.
Hundreds of people stood on the tarmac as an ambulance drove by. Eight people were rushed to hospitals.
Law enforcement officials would not confirm rumors that there was a second shooter, according to Fox News. No word yet on the motive
More to come, obviously.
