Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich blasted the Obama White house Friday for hosting an event at Walmart to promote the company's efforts to increase its energy efficiency. Calling the corporate titan one of the country's "worst employers" because of its "low wages, unreliable hours, few benefits, discrimination against women and anti-union" issues, Reich wondered "what numbskull in the White House arranged this" in a facebook post.
Even worse, as the Huffington Post noted, is that Walmart doesn't exactly excel at the thing they are being celebrated by the White House for doing:
Since 2005, when Walmart began its efficiency drive, its greenhouse-gas emissions have risen 14 percent, according to a November 2013 report from the nonprofit Institute for Local Self-Reliance.
Reich said that Walmart's greenhouse gas emissions "grew 2 percent last year to nearly half a million metric tons," while its use of alternative energy continues to founder. None of that has stopped the Obama administration from celebrating the company's "progress," however.
