Erica Garner Rips Clinton Campaign for ‘Using’ Her Dad’s Death for Political Gain

"We don't want to mention Eric at all? I can see her coming after us for leaving him out of the piece."

A leaked e-mail exchange from inside the Hillary Clinton campaign discussed how they should or shouldn’t use the death of Eric Garner in a gun control op-ed. His daughter, Erica, is quite upset at this revelation and took to Twitter with her disgust.

Garner's name entered headlines in 2014 when he died after resisting arrest and the resulting struggle with New York Police officers for selling illegal loose cigarettes on the street. The famous words he said to the cop restraining him with a choke hold, “I can’t breathe,” became one of the rallying cries of the Black Lives Matter movement.

But since a gun wasn’t involved, Clinton’s camp wasn’t sure he should be included in a gun violence piece for The New York Daily News. Here’s that discussion in the e-mail chain from March 2016:

Hey everyone,

Attaching a draft op-ed from HRC on gun violence for placement in the New York Daily News.

Please let me know any edits or comments in the next hour or so.

Thanks!

I like it. Since it is the NYDN I think we should add the terrorist watch list piece. I defer to you on where but we could stick at the end of this riff as a proof point against the NRA?

I’ve been fighting for this issue for years. So have families across the country. Still, the NRA and their allies in Congress have managed to block even the most commonsense reforms.

Four small things:

I'd change "him" to "them" in the first line.

I'm not sure I'd say she's lead the fight on the Charleston loophole, because she really has no power other than to advocate or denounce. Good to be strong in our language but might lose that first line.

And check the NRA piece with Jen. That played strangely in Ohio for us at least initially. I think it should stay in but flag that for her.

Finally, I know we have Erica Garner issues but we don't want to mention Eric at all? I can see her coming after us for leaving him out of the piece.

Eric Garner not included because not killed by gun violence.

That's a pretty good point.

On Thursday, an angered Erica Garner cringed at the thought of her dad being fodder for Clinton’s political aspirations and expressed her feelings strongly on Twitter:

This isn’t the first time Garner has criticized Clinton. She was an avid Bernie Sanders supporter during the primaries and doesn’t appear to have shifted her support to Clinton, which is evident in this last tweet:

The Freedom Center is a 501c3 non-profit organization. Therefore we do not endorse political candidates either in primary or general elections. However, as defenders of America’s social contract, we insist that the rules laid down by both parties at the outset of campaigns be respected, and that the results be decided by free elections. We will oppose any attempt to rig the system and deny voters of either party their constitutional right to elect candidates of their choice.
