Wednesday night the controversial "rich redneck," patriarch Papa Phil, and the rest of the Robertson family returned to television on their A&E show Duck Dynasty.
Prior to the premiere of the fifth season of the successful show media buzz was that the producers of American Idol feared the entertaining owners and employees of Duck Commander from Louisiana would dominate the ratings. American Idol did win the night, but Duck Dynasty did great in the coveted 18-49 demographic.
The Robertson family brought in 8.5 million viewers, vastly beating out liberal leaning feminist show Girls on HBO by 7.4 million. The creator and star of Girls has been known to tweet idiotic things, do an odd video for President Obama's re-election campaign comparing voting for the first time to losing your virginity, and of course show copious amounts of onscreen nudity - a proclivity discussed in a scathing and column by TruthRevolt's own Andrew Klavan.
Duck Dynasty has seen strong ratings for the past couple of seasons. In 2013 Variety reports they were third place among viewers 12-34, just behind The Walking Dead and Sunday Night Football. Time will tell if the controversy over Phil Robertson's remarks on homosexuality to GQ will help or hurt the show this season.
