It's no secret that Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has struggled to inspire enthusiasm among millennials, which is perhaps why she chose to make a guest appearance on the irreverent and often raunchy sitcom, Broad City.
In what appears a desperate effort to appeal to young voters, Clinton made her guest appearance in an episode dubbed "2016," in which one of the show's two protagonists, Ilana, volunteers for the Hillary campaign oblivious to the fact that the gig does not pay. Newsbusters provides the relevant portions of the transcript and video clip:
Barb: Over the next few weeks, we are gonna push hard toward the primary. We are gonna call every registered Democratic voter, we are gonna confirm the location of their polling place. Every vote counts.
Ilana: Yas, yas, yas, yas, yas!
Barb: Thank you. But just remind them succinctly that a vote for Hillary is a vote for the working class.
Ilana: And minorities. You know, your caramels, your queers, your Ls, your Gs, your Bs, your Ts, your Qs. Vets, right? Babies. The -- The handi-capable.
Barb: Yes! Thank you, Ms. Um...?
Ilana: Ilana... Rodham Wexler.
Barb: I love your enthusiasm, but how about the next time you have the impulse to say "Yas," you could just nod. So back to cold-calling. It's really important to remind people of Hillary's service. Not only was she Secretary of State. She was a practicing lawyer. She expanded health insurance for lower income families. And she's won a Grammy.
Ilana: Oh... (Gasping deeply) I did not know that.
(The show crescendos with the appearance of Hillary at her campaign headquarters. Abbi is there, too, and is so excited to see Hillary she stammers through her introduction and ends with “I pegged,” which is a reference to a woman using a strap on dildo to have anal sex with a man.
NB astutely asks what kind of campaign manager would ever allow his or her candidate to be part of a conversation, in a tv program no less, involving sex toys. A pandering liberal one, that's the kind!
The show goes on:
Abbi: Abbi. Hello. Proud demo. Crat. College! Aquarius. I pegged
Ilana: Secretary Clinton. Madam... Présidente. She-king. I can't afford to volunteer here full-time, but I still want to get the word out, so I vow to tweet once a week, "Vote for Hillary. Yas, yas, yas."
Hillary: That would be great. We need to drum up some excitement for the campaign, do everything that we possibly can. You know what I'll do? Yes. Look at that! I thought this would be really good for office morale! Isn't she great?
Ilana: Of course. We assumed it was a he.
Hillary: Oh, no, no. It's a she.
Abbi and Ilana: It's definitely a she. Oh, God. Yeah. This feels... Just right. Right.
We're not sure what's worse, really - a television program allowing itself to be turned into a political campaign ad, or the fact that Clinton had to stoop to Obama-level-tactics by trying to paint herself as hip and cool. There would have been nothing wrong with the latter, per se, if it remained true to Clinton's personality and character. But alas, it does not.
