America’s campuses have long been bastions of political correctness, but administrators at the University of Colorado-Boulder recently took attempts to limit offensive speech one step further by launching a new initiative to encourage students to report any “bias” they witness on campus.
A description of the campaign on UC-Boulder’s website states that the “Bias Incident Reporting Protocol” is intended to “provide information on how our university responds to acts of bias involving students” and to “address the impact of demeaning and hurtful statements as well as acts of intolerance directed towards protected classes.”
“Students who perceive that they have experienced a bias-motivated incident, as well as students, faculty or staff who are witnesses to a bias incident involving students, are urged to report the incident immediately,” CU’s website states.
Administrators advertised the new campaign with posters placed around campus containing quotes given as examples of “bias motivated incidents” such as “Go back to Africa, you don’t belong here,” "You're such a pussy, such a fag. You are not even a real man," and “Your mom must be the janitor ’cause that’s the only job for dirty Mexicans.”
Ironically, the posters themselves risked offending students, leading CU Chancellor Philip DiStefano to post an online explanation stating “What ought to offend here is not the language on the posters, but the language that is used in perpetuating acts of racism, ethnic intimidation, homophobia and other acts of bias in our campus community.”
The University claims that “This protocol is not intended to be a disciplinary procedure or tool” and that “encouraging and supporting debate and open discussion and disagreement on our campus remains important to us.”
But this may be small comfort to the students reported for committing “bias acts” whose information—which according to The College Fix including names, birthdays, genders and even social security numbers—will now be recorded by the campus administration.
