In last week’s Revolting Truth satire video, I had some laughs with the idea of “debunking” Obama conspiracy theories. For the literal-minded among you who like to receive the message straight, the point was this: We don’t need conspiracy theories about this president. The facts we know for sure are worse than anything we can imagine.
I believe conspiracy theorizing is often a form of denial. Leftists stoked Kennedy assassination conspiracy theories because they could not face the fact that a leftist had killed the president in the name of leftism. Truthers won’t believe the truth about 9-11 because they can’t accept that multi-culturalism is a damnable lie. And of course Holocaust deniers are really denying the hideous nature of the anti-Semitic hatred in their own hearts.
I suspect the same is true of the conspiracy theory that claims Obama is a secret Muslim conspiring with Islamists to bring about the Caliphate. Conservatives cling to this idea because they cannot bring themselves to acknowledge an even uglier truth.
Not that I blame the Obama’s-a-Muslim crowd for believing what they do. I mean, the way this president behaves, you could almost buy it. He won’t even name the religion behind the Tolkien-esque shadow of evil that is spreading across our world. He takes selfies while the Islamist monsters slaughter Christians en masse. When he mentions Christianity, it’s only in connection with imagined atrocities a thousand years old. And as for the Jews — that great people whom Satan hunts across the centuries — he has abandoned them in their latest hour of need.
So yeah, no wonder you get the kind of thing I saw on the American Thinker website this week. Anti-Islamic writer F.W. Burleigh printed a photo of Obama at last August’s U.S.-African Leaders’ Summit. In the picture, Obama is casually gesturing with a raised index finger to some of the African delegates there. Burleigh delivers over a thousand words explaining that the raised index finger is a secret Muslim gang sign, proving Obama’s Islamist sympathies beyond a doubt.
Now a raised index finger may well be a secret Muslim gang sign. But it’s also a sign for “I’ll be back in a mo,” “We’re Number One,” and “I’m Truckin’, yes indeed.” Nonetheless, the last time I looked, Burleigh’s article had over 800 comments and rising, almost all of them from readers who believe him.
Here’s what some of those readers don’t believe though: a new Gallup Poll shows Obama’s approval rating has risen back to 50 percent.
Because this is what the conspiracy theorists can’t accept. Obama’s not a Muslim. Hell, I seriously doubt he’s ever performed a sincere act of worship of any kind, except maybe taking those selfies. Obama is an academic leftist. He is, in the words of Norman Podhoretz, “a genuine product of the political culture that had its birth among a marginal group of leftists in the early 1960s and that by the end of the decade had spread metastatically to the universities, the mainstream media, the mainline churches, and the entertainment industry.”
Does Obama sympathize with Islamists? Weaken America? Assault our liberties? Hey, guess what! That’s what these people are like. This is what they believe in. This is what they do. They hate this country as founded. They hate that unwashed gun-and-Bible clingers should have the same freedoms as their high-minded citizen-of-the-world selves. They hate the west and believe that the totalitarian, raping, murdering, cancer of Islamism is not the product of a specific religious philosophy but merely a reaction to western crimes against humanity: our chickens come home to roost.
Obama’s Christian pastor actually said that. He’s no Muslim. Filmmaker Michael Moore has implied as much. He’s no Muslim. Every university where Islamists are coddled and Israel comes under attack is teaching our young people the very same thing.
Muslim? I wish Obama were a Muslim. There are plenty of patriotic American Muslims walking around. But these leftists are universally a moral horror. Their poisonous philosophy has been seeping into the mainstream for more than half a century. It should not surprise us that one of them is in the White House now with half of Americans — and most of the news media — on his side.
