I am pretty much an isolationist when it comes to foreign policy but it’s nice to check in with the experts once in a while to see what’s going on in the world. Turns out, we’re the laughing stock. A couple nights ago on “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” KT McFarland succinctly described the conflict in Ukraine and how it perfectly sums up this impotent administration. Her take on this foreign policy blunder should be on the front page of every paper in the country but it makes the president look stupid so nobody’s going to go near it.
To the outside world, it appears pro-Russia separatists are declaring independence all over Ukraine. Putin isn’t invading anyone so it would be foolish to get involved. McFarland explained what’s really going on. In short, Putin is “moving the borders” as she put it, by planting “little green men” into the area, stirring up trouble and then allowing these areas to declare independence themselves. After that, you pick up the border and move it to the next spot. Step and repeat. Putin has figured out a way to invade a country without invading a country. This is because he has brains and balls. Obama has neither so he has no idea what’s going on. The scary thing is, I feel like if we sat Barack down and explained Putin’s tactics on cue cards he’d stand up and say, “Look, I don’t care what he does as long as it doesn’t make me look bad.” It’s like when JFK discovered the medicine he was getting was actually speed and famously quipped, “I don’t care if it’s horse piss. It makes me feel better.” This is, after all, the hashtag presidency. Michelle holds signs with slogans on them and pouts. Obama hosts roasts masquerading as Correspondent’s dinners and whines about how mean Fox is to him. When our embassy is attacked, he avoids the mess and then sends Susan Rice to clean it up with talk show appearances. If you disagree, you’re racist. Politics used to be Hollywood for ugly people. Now it’s Hollywood for cool, dumb wimps.
I spoke to KT after the show. She was a key member of Henry Kissinger’s National Security Council Staff and just moderated a panel on Nixon’s legacy. I asked her if any of this would have happened during their days and she laughed. “Kissinger would have already guessed Putin’s strategy before he did it” she said, “and come up with several different ways to prevent him from doing it.” She then added, “foreign policy is conducted in the space between war and capitulation.”
Putin has seen the way Obama behaves. Obama likes to make it all about Obama. Trayvon could have been his son. The girls in Nigeria could have been his daughters. However, actually doing anything about it means jeopardizing the Obama brand. Putin crafts his warfare accordingly. “He declares ethnic Russians, regardless of nationality, to be Russian citizens” KT explained while pointing to examples in Georgia, Crimea and now the Baltics, “then he threatens the country with blackmail. In March, Gazprom said Ukraine owed $2 billion for gas imports. Today they say the price is $22 billion.” After all these chess pieces are in place, the people “vote” and what do you know, they end up siding with Russia. Obama turns a blind eye and the entire Western world sighs with relief because that means they don’t have to get involved either (especially Germany whose fragile economic recovery could turn on a dime).
President Obama has accidentally created one of the most paleolibertarian foreign policies we’ve ever had. He may have regulated his own country’s economy into near extinction but when it comes to the rest of the world, apparently they can all go to hell. I don’t really have a problem with that. It’s embarrassing watching Russia play our president like a balalaika but we’ve seen how Obama handles wars. He always makes them worse. The one thing we ask as citizens of the laughing stock is that you stop pretending you’re involved. You can’t hide under the bed and Tweet about how #fearless we must be. Especially when we’re all in the room with you.
